Background of the study
Accurate news broadcasting is fundamental to an informed society, and translation quality control is critical in ensuring that Hausa language news is delivered accurately and effectively in Kano. Translators must handle technical terms, idiomatic expressions, and rapidly evolving news content, making robust quality control mechanisms essential (Bello, 2023). Digital tools, combined with human oversight, are increasingly used to standardize translations; however, persistent errors such as misinterpretations of local idioms and inconsistent technical vocabulary continue to emerge (Garba, 2024). This study assesses current quality control practices in Hausa news broadcasting by analyzing broadcast segments, reviewing post-editing protocols, and interviewing news editors and translators. The aim is to determine the effectiveness of these measures in maintaining high standards and to identify areas for improvement that can enhance accuracy and audience trust in the news.

Statement of the problem
Despite established quality control procedures, Hausa news broadcasting in Kano often exhibits translation errors that lead to miscommunication of critical information (Bello, 2023). These issues stem from inconsistent application of standards and insufficient oversight, undermining the credibility of news outlets.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate current quality control measures in Hausa news translation.
  2. To identify recurring translation errors.
  3. To recommend strategies for improvement.

Research questions:

  1. What quality control measures are used?
  2. What errors are most common?
  3. How can quality be improved?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it improves understanding of quality control in Hausa news broadcasting, contributing to better public communication and trust in media. The findings will assist media houses and translators in refining practices (Bello, 2023; Garba, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to Hausa news broadcasting in Kano; other media forms are not covered.

Definitions of terms:

  • Quality control: Processes to ensure translation accuracy.
  • News broadcasting: Dissemination of news through various media.
  • Hausa language: The primary language of Northern Nigeria.
